Aquarius
Fixed air sign, ruled by Uranus and pictured as the water-bearer
Aquarius is the eleventh sign, a fixed air sign pictured as the water-bearer. Uranus is its modern ruler and Saturn its traditional one.
What it stands for
- independence
- ideas
- reform
- detachment
What the tradition says
Aquarius is described as independent, inventive and interested in people as a group. Air gives it ideas and the fixed quality gives it conviction, so the sign is linked with reform and with holding an opinion firmly. Uranus ties it to invention and sudden change. The shadow side is detachment.
Where it fits
As a fixed sign, Aquarius falls in the middle of a season in the Northern Hemisphere. Its element, air, is shared with Gemini and Libra.
In tarot
The Golden Dawn tradition, which most modern tarot decks follow, links Aquarius with The Star, Five of Swords, Six of Swords and Seven of Swords. The court cards of the suit that shares its element, Swords, are also loosely linked with it.
The dates are the usual tropical ones and shift by a day either way from year to year. People born close to a boundary should look at cusps.
Tarot, astrology and numerology are traditions of symbolism. This page says what the tradition associates with its subject. It does not predict anything and it is not advice.
