Uranus

The planet of rebellion: what it stands for in astrology

Uranus is the seventh planet from the Sun. William Herschel found it in 1781, the first planet discovered with a telescope, and it is named for the Greek sky god.

What it stands for

  • freedom
  • change
  • invention
  • disruption

In the birth chart

In the birth chart Uranus shows where a person breaks with convention and wants freedom. It is the planet of sudden change, originality and invention, and its sign marks a whole generation, because it spends about seven years in each sign.

The name and the myth

Ouranos was the Greek personification of the sky and the father of the Titans. The planet was named long after the older seven, which is why Uranus has no ancient mythology of its own in astrology.

How astrology reads it

Astrology gave Uranus the sign Aquarius and links it with technology, reform, revolution and surprise. Its energy is described as unpredictable and sudden, and as making hidden or suppressed things visible. People with a strong Uranus are traditionally described as independent and hard to hold down.

Signs: Aquarius.
