How the birth card is found
Write the date of birth in full and add every digit. For 15 March 1984 that is 1 + 5 + 0 + 3 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 4 = 31. The major arcana only go up to 21, with the Fool as 0 (counted as 22 here), so any total above 22 is added down again: 3 + 1 = 4, which is the Emperor.
When the first total is 10 or more, it can be reduced once more to a single digit. Many readers then speak of two cards. The first is the personality card, the way you present and what others see. The last, single-digit one is the soul card, the deeper theme. A middle card appears when the reduction takes more than one step, as 19 becomes 10 and then 1. Some people have only one card, because their total is already a single digit.
This method was popularised in the 1980s by writers such as Mary K. Greer and Angeles Arrien, and it is a close relative of the single-digit reduction used in numerology: the same arithmetic gives your life path number. Other writers use slightly different rules, for example about how to treat a total of 22. None of them is official, and none is a prediction.
The year card uses the same sum with the birth day and month and a chosen year in place of the birth year. It is a popular way to give a year a theme.
