Earth
Practical, steady and reliable
Earth is the element of the material world: bodies, work, money and things that last. Its three signs are Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn.
What it stands for
- practicality
- stability
- the senses
- patience
What the tradition says
The earth signs are described as practical, disciplined and responsible, with a feeling for the physical world, for food, home and finances. They are cautious about risk, slow to change a decision and dependable. The traditional shadow side is stubbornness and a lack of adventure.
The three earth signs
- Taurus: Fixed earth: loyal, trustworthy and patient, with a taste for comfort.
- Virgo: Mutable earth: meticulous, analytical and efficient.
- Capricorn: Cardinal earth: organised, ambitious and realistic.
In tarot
Earth is the element of the tarot suit of Pentacles: work, money, the body. Browse every earth card, including the major arcana that carry the element.
The natural houses are the places in the chart that match the signs in order: the first house goes with Aries, the second with Taurus, and so on round the wheel. The earth houses are the 2nd, 6th and 10th.
Tarot, astrology and numerology are traditions of symbolism. This page says what the tradition associates with its subject. It does not predict anything and it is not advice.
