Sagittarius
Mutable fire sign, ruled by Jupiter and pictured as the archer
Sagittarius is the ninth sign, a mutable fire sign ruled by Jupiter and pictured as the archer, a centaur drawing a bow. Its glyph is an arrow.
What it stands for
- freedom
- travel
- optimism
- philosophy
What the tradition says
Sagittarius is described as optimistic, outspoken and fond of freedom, travel and big questions. The archer aims at a distant target, which is why the sign is linked with higher learning, long journeys and belief. The traditional shadow side is restlessness and a blunt tongue.
Where it fits
As a mutable sign, Sagittarius closes a season in the Northern Hemisphere. Its element, fire, is shared with Aries and Leo.
In tarot
The Golden Dawn tradition, which most modern tarot decks follow, links Sagittarius with Temperance, Eight of Wands, Nine of Wands and Ten of Wands. The court cards of the suit that shares its element, Wands, are also loosely linked with it.
The dates are the usual tropical ones and shift by a day either way from year to year. People born close to a boundary should look at cusps.
Tarot, astrology and numerology are traditions of symbolism. This page says what the tradition associates with its subject. It does not predict anything and it is not advice.
