Scorpio

Fixed water sign, ruled by Pluto and pictured as the scorpion

Scorpio is the eighth sign, a fixed water sign pictured as the scorpion. Pluto is its modern ruler and Mars its traditional one.

What it stands for

  • intensity
  • depth
  • privacy
  • resolve

What the tradition says

Scorpio is described as intense, private and determined. Water gives it deep feeling and the fixed quality gives it staying power, so the sign is linked with loyalty, transformation and a reluctance to let go. The scorpion is the traditional picture of something that stays hidden until it is disturbed.

Where it fits

As a fixed sign, Scorpio falls in the middle of a season in the Northern Hemisphere. Its element, water, is shared with Cancer and Pisces.

In tarot

The Golden Dawn tradition, which most modern tarot decks follow, links Scorpio with Death, Five of Cups, Six of Cups and Seven of Cups. The court cards of the suit that shares its element, Cups, are also loosely linked with it.

The dates are the usual tropical ones and shift by a day either way from year to year. People born close to a boundary should look at cusps.

Tarot, astrology and numerology are traditions of symbolism. This page says what the tradition associates with its subject. It does not predict anything and it is not advice.
