Hygeia
Asteroid of wellness: what it stands for in astrology
Hygeia, spelled Hygiea by astronomers, is a large asteroid discovered in 1849. It is named for the Greek goddess of health, and the words hygiene and hygienic come from her name.
What it stands for
- health
- hygiene
- prevention
- balance
In the birth chart
In the birth chart Hygeia is read as the style of a person's approach to wellness, in the sense of habits, balance and prevention. It is a minor point that many astrologers do not use at all, and the tradition around it is recent.
The name and the myth
Hygeia was the daughter of Asclepius, the god of healing, and of Epione. Her sisters were Panacea, the all-healing, and Iaso, the goddess of recovery.
How astrology reads it
Astrology uses Hygeia as a symbol of wellness as a way of living: daily habits, prevention and balance. It is a symbolic reading only, and nothing here is medical advice.
Tarot, astrology and numerology are traditions of symbolism. This page says what the tradition associates with its subject. It does not predict anything and it is not advice.
