Moon

Ruler of emotions: what it stands for in astrology

The Moon is Earth's natural satellite and the fastest-moving body in the birth chart. Astrology treats it as a luminary, alongside the Sun, and as the ruler of Cancer.

What it stands for

  • emotion
  • instinct
  • memory
  • habit

In the birth chart

The Moon's sign at birth is read as a person's emotional nature: instinctive reactions, comfort, moods and what makes them feel safe. Its house shows where those needs are most felt.

The name and the myth

The Moon was Selene to the Greeks and Luna to the Romans. In many traditions it is linked with the feminine, with the tides, and with intuition and the unconscious.

How astrology reads it

Because the Moon changes sign every two to three days, astrologers often follow it day to day for mood and timing. The lunar cycle runs through the new moon, crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous and last quarter, and the new moon and full moon are the points most often marked.

Signs: Cancer.

In tarot

In the Golden Dawn scheme, Moon goes with The High Priestess, Nine of Wands, Four of Cups, Two of Swords, Seven of Swords and Six of Pentacles.

Tarot, astrology and numerology are traditions of symbolism. This page says what the tradition associates with its subject. It does not predict anything and it is not advice.
